Supertrend Indicator Explained: A Complete Guide to Trend Following
Sep 23, 2026
Learn what the Supertrend indicator is, how it's calculated with the ATR, how to read its buy and sell signals, use it as a trailing stop, and set up an automatic Supertrend alert on TradingSignal.
The Supertrend indicator is one of the simplest and most popular trend-following tools in technical analysis, especially among crypto traders. Plotted directly on the price chart, it draws a single line that flips from below price to above price as the trend changes, giving clear, visual buy and sell signals. This guide explains what the Supertrend is, how it is calculated, how to read its signals, which settings to use, and how to set up an automatic Supertrend alert on TradingSignal.
What Is the Supertrend Indicator?
The Supertrend was created by Olivier Seban and is built on the Average True Range (ATR), a volatility measure developed by J. Welles Wilder. It combines price and volatility into one line that follows the trend:
- In an uptrend, the Supertrend line sits below price (usually shown in green) and acts as a trailing support.
- In a downtrend, the Supertrend line sits above price (usually shown in red) and acts as a trailing resistance.
When price closes on the other side of the line, the Supertrend flips and changes color, signaling a potential trend reversal. Because it only has two states, bullish or bearish, it is one of the easiest indicators to read at a glance.
How Is the Supertrend Calculated?
The Supertrend uses two settings, commonly written as Supertrend(10, 3):
- ATR period (10): the number of periods used to calculate the Average True Range.
- Multiplier (3): how many ATRs away from price the line is placed.
The calculation starts from the midpoint of each candle, (High + Low) / 2, and builds two bands around it:
- Upper band = (High + Low) / 2 + (Multiplier × ATR)
- Lower band = (High + Low) / 2 − (Multiplier × ATR)
In an uptrend, the Supertrend follows the lower band and can only move up, never down. In a downtrend, it follows the upper band and can only move down. When price closes beyond the active band, the trend flips and the indicator switches to the opposite band.
You don't need to calculate this by hand. Charting platforms and tools like TradingSignal compute it automatically, but understanding the formula explains why the Supertrend adapts to volatility: the more volatile the market, the further the line sits from price.
How to Read the Supertrend
Buy and Sell Signals
The core Supertrend signals are its flips:
- Buy signal: price closes above the Supertrend line, the line flips below price and turns green. The trend has turned bullish.
- Sell signal: price closes below the Supertrend line, the line flips above price and turns red. The trend has turned bearish.
Many traders simply stay long while the Supertrend is green and stay out (or short) while it is red.
Using the Supertrend as a Trailing Stop
Because the line only moves in the direction of the trend, the Supertrend works very well as a trailing stop-loss. In a long position, you can place your stop just below the green line and move it up as the line rises. If price closes below it, the trend has likely ended and the position is closed. This helps you stay in winning trades longer while protecting profits.
Confirming the Trend Direction
Even if you trade with other indicators, the Supertrend is a useful filter: only take long setups when it is green and short setups when it is red. This simple rule removes many trades against the dominant trend.
Choosing Supertrend Settings and Timeframe
The classic 10, 3 settings are a good starting point, but they are not a fixed rule:
- Lower multiplier or shorter ATR period (for example 7, 2) keeps the line closer to price. Signals arrive earlier, but you get more whipsaws and false flips.
- Higher multiplier or longer ATR period (for example 14, 4) keeps the line further from price. Signals are fewer and later, but more reliable in volatile markets like crypto.
The timeframe matters just as much. A Supertrend flip on a 5-minute chart describes a very short-term change, while a flip on a 4-hour or daily chart often marks a significant trend shift. A popular approach is to use a higher-timeframe Supertrend to define the trend and a lower-timeframe one to time entries.
Combining the Supertrend With Other Tools
The Supertrend is a trend-following indicator, so it pairs well with tools that measure momentum or trend strength:
- RSI: in a green Supertrend, look for RSI pullbacks toward 40-50 as entry opportunities rather than buying at an overbought reading.
- MACD: a MACD crossover in the same direction as a Supertrend flip adds momentum confirmation.
- ADX: an ADX above 20-25 confirms that the market is actually trending, which is when the Supertrend works best.
- Moving averages: a 200-period moving average can act as a long-term filter, only taking Supertrend buy signals above it.
Limitations of the Supertrend
The Supertrend is effective in trending markets, but it has weaknesses traders should know:
- Whipsaws in ranges: in sideways markets, price crosses the line back and forth, producing a string of losing signals.
- Lagging signals: because it waits for a close beyond the line, the Supertrend always enters after the trend has already started and exits after it has already turned.
- Settings dependent: the same settings don't work equally well on every asset or timeframe, so some testing is needed.
Use the Supertrend alongside price action, a trend-strength filter and solid risk management, not as a complete trading system on its own.
Setting Up a Supertrend Alert on TradingSignal
Waiting for the next Supertrend flip means watching charts for hours. With TradingSignal, creating a Supertrend alert is very easy: the app monitors the indicator for you and sends a notification the moment price crosses above or below the Supertrend line. Setting it up only takes a few seconds:
- Pair: choose the market you want to watch among 1,500+ pairs on Binance, KuCoin and more.
- Supertrend settings: keep the classic ATR period of 10 and multiplier of 3, or adjust them to your strategy.
- Condition: choose whether you want to be alerted when price crosses above the Supertrend (bullish flip) or below it (bearish flip).
- Interval: the candle timeframe to calculate the Supertrend on, from 1-minute charts up to daily charts.
Save your alert and TradingSignal will notify you automatically, by push notification or email, as soon as the trend flips. No need to keep a chart open or calculate anything by hand.
