Break of Structure (BOS) and Change of Character (CHoCH) Explained: A Complete Guide to Market Structure
Oct 13, 2026
Learn the difference between Break of Structure (BOS) and Change of Character (CHoCH), how to identify them, how to read market structure in crypto, and how to set up automatic alerts on TradingSignal.
Markets move in structure: a sequence of swing highs and swing lows that tells you who is in control. When that structure shifts, trends are born, continued or reversed. Two concepts from price action and Smart Money trading help you read these shifts: Break of Structure (BOS) and Change of Character (CHoCH). Once you can tell them apart, you can see whether a move is simply continuing or whether the market is changing direction. This guide explains both, how they are identified, how to use them in crypto, and how to be alerted automatically.
What Are BOS and CHoCH?
Market structure is built from swing points. In an uptrend, price makes higher highs (HH) and higher lows (HL). In a downtrend, it makes lower highs (LH) and lower lows (LL).
- Break of Structure (BOS): price closes beyond the last swing high or swing low in the direction of the current trend. In an uptrend, a close above the previous swing high is a bullish BOS. It confirms the trend is continuing.
- Change of Character (CHoCH): price closes beyond a swing in the opposite direction of the current trend. In an uptrend, a close below the last higher low is a bearish CHoCH. It is the first warning that the trend may be reversing.
In short, BOS means continuation, while CHoCH means a possible reversal.
How They Are Identified
The method is rule-based, which makes it easy to automate:
- Step 1, find swings: a swing high is a candle whose high is above the highs of the N candles on each side. A swing low is the opposite. A common value for N is 3 to 5.
- Step 2, define the trend: HH and HL means bullish structure, LH and LL means bearish structure.
- Step 3, watch for closes: a candle close beyond the relevant swing is the signal. Using closes rather than wicks removes many liquidity grabs.
Example: Bitcoin trades in an uptrend with a swing high at 68,000 and a higher low at 65,000. A close at 68,400 is a bullish BOS and the trend continues. If instead price closes at 64,600, below the higher low, a bearish CHoCH appears and the uptrend is now in question.
How to Read BOS and CHoCH
- BOS in trend direction: confirms momentum. Traders often wait for a pullback after the BOS to join the trend.
- First CHoCH after a long trend: a warning, not a guarantee. Many traders reduce risk or wait for confirmation.
- CHoCH followed by BOS in the new direction: the strongest sign that a reversal is real.
- Strong displacement: a break made by a large, fast candle with high volume is more convincing than a slow drift through the level.
- Higher timeframe context: a CHoCH on a 15-minute chart against a daily uptrend is often only a pullback.
Best Settings for Crypto
- Swing length: 3 to 5 candles on each side is a balanced default. Larger values give fewer but more significant structure points.
- Timeframe: 1-hour to daily charts reduce noise. Lower timeframes create many structure breaks that mean little.
- Confirmation: use candle closes, not wicks, since crypto is prone to sharp liquidity sweeps.
- Pairs: liquid pairs like BTC, ETH and SOL respect structure better than thin altcoins.
Combining BOS and CHoCH With Other Tools
- Fair Value Gaps: a BOS that leaves a gap gives you a zone to watch for a retest and entry.
- Support and Resistance: structure breaks at major levels carry more weight.
- Volume Spike: heavy volume on the break shows real participation.
- RSI divergence: a CHoCH preceded by bearish divergence strengthens a reversal case.
- Moving averages or Supertrend: use them as a higher-level trend filter to trade only BOS in the main direction.
Limitations to Keep in Mind
Market structure is partly subjective, and different traders may mark different swings. Structure breaks are lagging by nature: you only see them after the close. In choppy, sideways markets, BOS and CHoCH signals appear in both directions and quickly fail. A CHoCH can also be nothing more than a deep pullback inside a bigger trend. Use structure together with context, volume and a clear risk plan, with a stop-loss placed where your idea is invalidated.
Setting Up a BOS or CHoCH Alert on TradingSignal
You do not need to mark swing points by hand all day. In the TradingSignal app, you can create structure alerts in a few taps:
- Pair: choose the crypto pair to monitor, for example BTC/USDT or ETH/USDT.
- Alert type: select Break of Structure or Change of Character from the strategy signals.
- Parameters: set the swing length that defines what counts as a swing high or low.
- Condition: the alert fires when price closes beyond the last swing high or swing low (BOS), or beyond a swing against the prior structure (CHoCH).
- Interval: pick the timeframe, from 1 minute to weekly, that fits your trading style.
When the structure shifts, TradingSignal sends an instant push notification so you can open the chart, check volume and gaps, and plan your trade. For best results, run a CHoCH alert on a higher timeframe and a BOS alert on a lower one.
