XRP Ledger Patches Bug That Could Have Minted XRP From Nothing

RippleX quietly fixed a flaw in the XRP Ledger that could have let someone create new XRP out of nowhere — and says it was caught before anyone used it.

A Scary Bug, Caught In Time

A security report published on October 9 revealed something that should make any XRP holder pause for a second: a flaw in the XRP Ledger that, in theory, could have let an attacker mint brand new XRP out of nothing.

That's about as serious as a bug gets for a blockchain. Create tokens from nothing and you break the entire supply model the asset is built on.

The Fix Came Fast

The good news is RippleX moved quickly. The issue was patched in the xrpld 3.4.1 software release, and according to the team, there's no evidence anyone actually found and used the exploit before it got fixed.

Validators are now expected to upgrade to the patched version, and so far things look calm — no weird supply spikes, no panic on exchanges.

Still, it's a useful reminder that even mature, years-old blockchains can carry bugs nobody noticed yet. Catching this one before it got exploited is a good outcome, but it won't stop people from asking how long it was sitting there unnoticed.
