Wall Street Just Bought a Piece of Crypto Security
Sep 20, 2026
S&P Global is acquiring smart contract auditor OpenZeppelin, a sign that traditional finance is taking onchain security seriously.
A Big Name Buys Into Crypto Security
S&P Global, the company behind those credit ratings you see on every corporate bond, just agreed to buy OpenZeppelin, one of the most respected names in smart contract security. That's a pretty notable crossover between old-school finance and crypto infrastructure.
OpenZeppelin isn't a small player either. Its open-source code libraries reportedly sit behind more than $37 trillion in transferred value, and the firm has run over 900 security audits, including catching a bug years ago that could have put billions in Convex Finance funds at risk.
Business As Usual, Just Under New Ownership
The good news for the DeFi world: OpenZeppelin will keep operating under its own name, with its current CEO staying in charge. S&P Global says the move is about giving both traditional institutions and crypto-native firms more confidence to build onchain, by pairing its own risk-assessment reputation with OpenZeppelin's technical chops.
No price tag was shared, but the signal is clear: legacy finance sees crypto security as a real, growing business.
