The UK Just Picked 6 Big Banks to Build Its First Digital Government Bond
Oct 7, 2026
HM Treasury named Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest and RBC Capital Markets to lead DIGIT, the UK's first digitally-native government bond, with a test issuance expected in early 2027.
Six Banks, One Big Experiment
The UK government just took a real step toward tokenizing its own debt. HM Treasury has named Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest, and RBC Capital Markets as joint lead managers for DIGIT, the country's first digitally-native government bond.
This announcement closes out the procurement phase, meaning the groundwork is officially done. The next big milestone — an actual test issuance — is expected sometime in Q1 2027.
Why It's a Big Deal
Government bonds are about as traditional as finance gets, so putting one on a blockchain rail is a strong signal that tokenization isn't just a crypto-native experiment anymore. When six major banks sign on to lead a sovereign debt pilot, it tells you institutions are taking this seriously.
Expect more governments to watch this pilot closely — a successful test could open the door for digital bonds to become a normal part of public debt markets.
