The DOJ Is Taking Another Look at Binance

US DOJ officials are reviewing whether Binance has complied with the terms of its $4.3 billion 2023 settlement, raising the possibility of fresh penalties.

Binance's legal troubles might not be over after all. According to a Bloomberg report, the US Department of Justice is reviewing whether the world's largest crypto exchange has been sticking to the terms of its 2023 settlement.

A quick recap

Back in 2023, Binance agreed to pay a jaw-dropping $4.3 billion to resolve a criminal case tied to anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations. As part of that deal, the exchange accepted ongoing compliance monitoring. Tysen Duva, who heads the DOJ's Criminal Division, confirmed on October 9 that officials are now checking whether Binance has held up its end of the bargain.

It's worth noting this is a compliance review, not necessarily a new criminal case — but given the size of the original fine, any sign of backsliding could open the door to fresh penalties. Binance hasn't issued a detailed public response yet. For an exchange that's been trying to rebuild trust with regulators, the timing isn't great.
