Symbiosis Bridge Hack: Attackers Walk Away With Peanuts After Botched BTC Exploit
Sep 14, 2026
A hacker tried to drain Symbiosis' Bitcoin bridge but only walked away with a tiny fraction of the funds, while the protocol says it's already clawed back 15 BTC.
What happened
Cross-chain bridge Symbiosis got hit with an exploit targeting its Bitcoin bridging setup, but the damage ended up way smaller than it could have been. Security firm Blockaid flagged that roughly 46.1 billion syBTC tokens were minted without proper backing during the attack — a number that sounds terrifying on paper.
Here's the twist though: the attacker only managed to cash out around $336,000 in actual proceeds before the exploit got contained. Symbiosis says it has already recovered 15 BTC tied to the incident.
A bounty instead of a lawsuit
Instead of just going after the attacker, the team is offering a 20% bounty of the recovered funds if the rest gets returned — a pretty common move in DeFi these days when protocols want a quick, no-drama resolution.
It's a reminder that bridges remain one of the juiciest targets in crypto, but also that fast detection can turn a potential nine-figure disaster into a five-figure headache.
