Nine Blockchain Firms Just Formed a Quantum Alliance — Here's Why It Matters

Nine blockchain companies have formed the Quantum Alliance to build shared standards for quantum-resistant crypto, warning that 30% of Bitcoin's supply currently sits exposed to future quantum attacks.

A New Alliance With a Big Mission

Nine blockchain companies — including Quantus, Keystone, Hacken, and the Midnight Foundation — just teamed up to form something called the Quantum Alliance. Their goal is simple to state but hard to pull off: build open, shared standards for figuring out how quantum-resistant a blockchain, wallet, or piece of infrastructure actually is.

Right now, there's no agreed way to measure that. Everyone's guessing.

Why Bitcoin Should Pay Attention

The numbers behind this announcement are the real headline. About 6 million BTC, or roughly 30% of all the Bitcoin that will ever exist, sits in wallets that rely on classical cryptographic signatures — the kind a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could eventually crack. Some researchers think that moment could arrive as early as 2028 or 2029.

The Alliance plans to split into four working groups covering migration, zero-knowledge proofs, wallet security, and cross-chain compatibility, following an open, IETF-style process. It's early days, but it's a reminder that "quantum-proofing" crypto isn't science fiction anymore — it's homework.
