Ethereum's New zkAPI Lets You Pay for AI Without Showing Your ID

The Ethereum Foundation launched zkAPI, letting users pay for AI models and other metered APIs using zero-knowledge proofs instead of linking payments to their identity.

Pay For AI, Keep Your Identity Private

The Ethereum Foundation just rolled out something pretty clever called zkAPI, built together with the Open Anonymity Project. The idea is simple: right now, every time you call an AI API, your identity gets tied to it through your account and payment method. zkAPI breaks that link completely.

Here's how it works. You deposit ETH or USDC into a vault contract, and your balance gets recorded as a private note. When you actually want to spend it, your device generates a zero-knowledge proof showing you have funds backing the request, without revealing which exact funds they are. A "nullifier" stops anyone from double-spending the same note.

The first real use case is private AI chat and agent tools. The client software mimics the standard OpenAI and Ollama APIs locally, so existing apps can just point to localhost and start working with zero setup pain.

Beyond AI, the team mentions this could extend to blockchain RPC queries, image generation, VPN bandwidth, and even machine-to-machine payments between AI agents down the line.
