ECB's Lagarde Reportedly Pushed to Block Binance's EU License

ECB President Christine Lagarde reportedly asked Greece's PM to block Binance's EU crypto license bid, citing US violations and stablecoin risks to the digital euro.

A License Bid That Stalled at the Finish Line

Binance's push to get a proper EU license just hit a wall, and apparently a big one. According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, ECB President Christine Lagarde personally reached out to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and asked him to reject Binance's application.

Binance had applied through Greek regulators for a crypto-asset service provider license under the EU's MiCA framework. The appeal of that route is simple: get approved in one member state, and you're basically covered across the whole bloc. That's exactly what made this such a big deal.

Why Lagarde Got Involved

The report says Lagarde flagged two concerns. First, Binance's messy regulatory history in the US. Second, and maybe more interesting, worries that wider use of dollar-pegged stablecoins could undercut the ECB's own digital euro plans down the line.

Whether this ends Binance's EU ambitions for good is unclear, but it's a reminder that Europe's central bank is watching crypto adoption closely and isn't afraid to get involved directly.
