Aave Wants Institutions to Borrow Without Ever Moving Their Collateral Onchain

A new Aave proposal lets institutions borrow stablecoins against Anchorage-custodied Bitcoin without ever moving the collateral onchain.

Custody Meets DeFi

Aave has put forward a new proposal called Custodied Collateral Lending, and it's aimed squarely at institutions that like DeFi's yields but can't stomach DeFi's custody requirements.

Here's the idea: a regulated custodian like Anchorage holds an institution's assets, say Bitcoin, the whole time. That collateral never actually moves onchain. Instead, a non-transferable token representing the custodied balance gets minted so Aave's markets can "see" it, while Chainlink's CustodySync keeps everything in sync behind the scenes.

Why Bother?

Institutions have long wanted onchain lending without giving up the custody arrangements their compliance teams require. This setup lets them borrow stablecoins against Anchorage-held collateral while legal ownership never leaves the custodian. It's built as an isolated Aave V4 market, walled off from Aave's main reserves, so nothing here touches existing depositors' funds.

If it works, it becomes a template: swap in a different custodian or asset type, and the same plumbing should still apply.
