A16z-Backed Linera Shuts Down After Missing Its Funding Target
Sep 19, 2026
A16z-backed layer-1 Linera is ceasing operations immediately after its token sale missed the funding threshold needed to keep it going.
Another Layer 1 Bites the Dust
Linera, a layer-1 blockchain project backed by a16z, announced on Discord that it's shutting down operations immediately. The reason comes down to money: the project simply couldn't raise enough of it.
The team had launched a token sale on Sonar hoping to hit a funding threshold that would keep the lights on. Instead, it pulled in just under $900,000 in commitments, well short of what was needed. With the minimum not met, the sale failed and the team pulled the plug rather than limp along.
What It Means for the L1 Race
Linera's collapse is a reminder that a big-name backer doesn't guarantee survival in a brutal L1 market. Dozens of chains are competing for the same liquidity, developers, and attention, and even projects with strong pedigrees can run out of runway fast.
For investors, it's another data point in a year where consolidation in the L1 space has picked up speed. Expect more shakeouts as capital gets pickier about which chains actually have a path to real usage.
